An Immersive Art & Storytelling Experience on Deed Theft and Community Displacement
The Cultural Museum of African Arts is honored to partner with The People’s Coalition to Stop Deed Theft and The Black Lady Theatre to present Displaced: We Shall Not Be Moved — an immersive art exhibit and dramatized storytelling experience centering the lived realities of individuals and families impacted by deed theft and displacement.
Brooklyn — and Bedford-Stuyvesant in particular — has emerged as the epicenter of the deed theft crisis in New York City. Long-standing Black homeowners and property owners have been disproportionately targeted through fraudulent deed transfers, coercive tactics, and predatory practices, often impacting Black elders and women most severely.
This powerful presentation blends visual art, performance, and facilitated audience engagement to create a space for witnessing, reflection, and cultural memory. Through storytelling grounded in real community experiences, Displaced uplifts voices too often silenced and affirms the resilience of families fighting to remain rooted in their homes and heritage.
By hosting this work within the community most affected, the Museum continues its commitment to cultural preservation, social justice, and collective empowerment.
