Visitor Guidelines

We are honored to welcome you to the California Museum of African American Experience Center (CMAAEC). Our mission is to preserve, celebrate, and share the vibrant history, culture, and contributions of African Americans. To ensure all visitors enjoy a respectful, safe, and meaningful experience, please review the guidelines below before your visit.


Admission

We believe access to culture is a shared right.

Admission to the Museum is always free for all guests.
Donations are welcomed and support our exhibitions, educational programs, and community initiatives.

Day Hours
Tuesday – Saturday 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Sunday & Monday Closed

We recommend arriving at least one hour before closing to allow time to explore the galleries comfortably.


Preparing for Your Visit

By visiting the Museum, you agree to follow the guidelines below. These policies help us maintain a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for all.


Health, Safety & Conduct

  • Bag Checks: All bags are subject to inspection upon entry.

  • Backpacks & Large Bags: Must be worn on the front or stored in a complimentary locker.

  • Food & Drinks: Not permitted in the galleries. (Water bottles may be carried but must remain closed in exhibition spaces.)

  • Respectful Behavior: Harassment, discrimination, or threatening language or behavior toward visitors or staff will not be tolerated.

  • Staff & Security Instructions: Please follow all directions from Museum staff; they are here to assist your visit.

The Museum reserves the right to refuse or revoke admission to anyone who does not adhere to these guidelines.


Photography & Mobile Devices

  • Personal-use photography is allowed unless otherwise posted.

  • Flash photography, tripods, lighting setups, and commercial photography require prior approval.

  • Please silence devices and use headphones when engaging with audio content.
